PRESSURE is building on Public Services after airport neighbours demanded it reconsider using collapsible runway technology now it has been approved by airline industry watchdogs.

The residents, who would be at the heart of the disruption caused by the multi-million pound runway extension, said anything that would limit the impact on the island had to be looked at thoroughly.

PSD had considered using Emas, a surface that gives way under the weight of an aircraft to help stop it, when looking at improvement options. But at that time the Civil Aviation Authority had not approved the technology.

Now it has, Deputy David De Lisle has vowed to take an amendment or a requete to the States to force PSD to rethink its decision. It could avoid extending airport boundaries into neighbouring fields.
