GUERNSEY'S racquet players took centre-stage on the first day of competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

After a build-up mired in controversy, action finally began in the majority of sports and it was on the tennis and squash courts where Sarnians flourished.

Chris Simpson progressed through the opening two rounds of the men's singles squash into the last 16, which included an impressive 3-1 victory over New Zealand's Martin Knight, having already beaten his first-round Malawi opponent Aubrey Taulo.

Over in the tennis, Heather Watson and Patrick Ogier won their mixed doubles opener, despite being a set down, while both kick off their singles campaigns today.
