Merrien, Le Ber finish strongly
ALI MERRIEN chalked up two excellent wins to complete her group programme in the Commonwealth Games women's singles championship in Delhi yesterday and raised her position in the league table to sixth.

But she will be bitterly disappointed to have missed out on qualifying for the knockout stage, after being named as one of the favourites for the title.
Staring the day with a convincing 16-4, 7-4 win over Malta's Camilla Spiteri, she finished with a hard-earned 6-7, 8-7, 5-0 tiebreak victory over Jersey's Rachel Macdonald.
In between, she took on the reigning world outdoor champion Val Smith, who was determined to qualify and made sure of her place in the medal play-offs with a 9-5, 13-5 win over the Sarnian.
