'Smear campaign' blamed as Conseiller Cole loses his seat

A CONSEILLER who lost his seat in yesterday's Sark election was the victim of a sustained slur campaign, some islanders have claimed.

They blamed former Shipping Committee chairman Peter Cole's failure in the poll on a personal attack on him in the Sark Newsletter.

The free weekly newsletter is distributed and edited by Kevin Delaney, who runs Sark Estate Management.

Three of seven new candidates standing yesterday were employed or subcontracted to Sark Estate Management, and all failed to win a seat.

Mr Cole declined to comment.
