UK PLANS to punish airports which close during winter storms because they were poorly prepared have drawn a cautious welcome from Aurigny.

The island's airline said that threatened legislation to enable the aviation regulator to fine airports if passengers were delayed because of snow and ice were worth consideration.

The States-owned operator said it would be supportive of any move to improve service delivery from airports, but only as long as it did not result in higher charges for airlines.

Following severe disruption at Heathrow in the build-up to Christmas, UK Transport minister Theresa Villiers said revamping regulation, including the introduction of a new 'winter resilience' target, had become a priority for the government.
