There are differing opinions on the best way to approach the swim, but the general consensus seems to be one big leap in and then, just as quickly, a leap out.
It is a lovely way to start Christmas Day, bringing residents and visitors together, even if it is just to watch those braver than you.
Everyone is rewarded with brandy and hot chocolate – plus a healthy appreciation for the fiery warmth of the brazier afterwards.
The island carol service took place in St Tugual's Chapel on Christmas Eve.
Last year we held this service in the courtyard because the church was closed for renovation, so it was all the nicer to be back indoors in the cosy chapel this year.
After a lovely service and readings, everyone gathered in the Manor House for a little Christmas drink and get-together. This is a nice social occasion before the big day.
On Herm, Christmas Day truly is a family affair. No one is allowed to work. In this industry, where many of us have had to work these days for years before coming here, that is something to really be appreciated.
These are two very busy weeks to break up the quiet winter season. All the holiday cottages are full for Christmas and New Year, the gift shops and pub are open full-time and many hotel rooms are sold on a bed and breakfast basis.
