A SHORTAGE of nursing staff may see hospital wards remain closed for longer.

There are currently 26 nursing vacancies throughout the Health and Social Services Department.

A spokesman for the department said the shortage, combined with staff absences due to flu-like illnesses, maternity and annual leave, made it difficult for it to achieve the intended goal of opening additional beds by the end of March.

A combination of staff shortages and unforeseen delays in building work means the Ozanne Ward remains closed.
