EMAS should still be seriously considered as an option for improving Guernsey Airport's runway, according to some Western deputies.

This follows an independent report which said the technology, which uses collapsible concrete to stop a plane when it overshoots a runway, would add at least £6m. to the project and would still require the expansion of the airport boundaries.

But Deputy Al Brouard (pictured) said the Public Services Department should look again at Emas because the report rated the technology very highly and the scheme would allow La Mare Road to stay open.

He said it seemed to be a better solution than the one the States has agreed on, which extends the runway end safety areas.
