A few shoppers then it's CAB's Safeway supermarket sweep

QUEUES were expected to stretch out the door as Safeway closed for the last time on Saturday. But instead, the sparsely-stocked shop had one of its quietest ever mornings.

The supermarket was sold by Sandpiper CI to Waitrose for £23.9m. last year. The UK chain has also bought Checkers at Admiral Park.

Fewer than 300 customers came though the door between 7am and 2pm on the shop's last day, when ordinarily it would see about 1,200.

Sandpiper operations director Peter Clarke said they were surprised by the lack of customers.
