CONDOR Ferries could face harsh sanctions for future poor performance as part of a tough new approach to monitoring the service, Jersey's Economic Development minister Alan Maclean has said.

The senator issued the warning after a consumer survey carried out in Jersey and Guernsey last year revealed islanders' concerns over the Channel Islands' ferry service.

Of the Jersey-based survey respondents, 77% said the level of service Condor provided did not justify the fares charged. But two-thirds of Guernsey respondents were happy with what they got for their money.

Simon Edsall, managing director of Condor Ferries, said: 'We are heartened by the constructive responses to the consultation and agree with the minister that there are no grounds for further intervention or legislation.'
