GARY ROBERT was the sole Guernsey rider to travel to Jersey to compete in the fifth race of the sister isle's mountain bike Winter Cycle Centre Series that took place at Greve de Lecq.

And the man shortlisted for this summer's NatWest Island Games did not let himself down, coming away with a fine victory.

The race started by going down a bumpy field into a tight right-hander. It was important for Robert to get a good start as he wanted to avoid being at the back of the pack going up the first climb which would incur the risk of being held up by other riders.

He was in fifth position going up the first climb, but Robert then overtook a rider going down the track and while going through various fields he passed two more to gain second position.
