CYCLISTS have welcomed proposals for more places to leave their machines in Town.

The Environment Department has made a planning application for 10 extra cycle hoops on North Beach and 15 more on the Crown Pier, as well as two at the Town Markets. Each hoop is able to hold two bikes.

A spokesman said the aim of the hoops was to reduce the number of cars on the roads by persuading people to get on their bikes.

'With the provision of more cycle parking spaces in the centre of Town and, for the first time, the introduction of covered parking areas, the hope is that people will be more inclined to cycle into Town, safe in the knowledge that cycles will be sheltered for the day,' he said.
