IAN POWELL missed out on the final of the 200m butterfly at the British Gas National Swimming Championships in Manchester.

In a highly competitive field, Powell finished three places and 0.8 seconds off a place in today's final at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

Guernsey's top men's swimmer could not quite overcome a slow opening length to record a time of 2min. 02.58sec. with Commonwealth medallist Michael Rock setting the fastest pace of 1-56.26.

And Powell (pictured) will now have to go back to the drawing board ahead of his next event - the 100m butterfly and a final chance to qualify for the World Championships in Shanghai.
