Loveridge saves match points on her way to title

FROM the brink of defeat, Alice Loveridge managed to secure the Junior Six Nations gold medal and improve her rapidly soaring reputation.

The 16-year-old Sarnian (pictured) had already won the senior version of the gold medal in Ireland in October and was determined to secure an historic double in Limerick.

After successfully negotiating the early rounds, she found herself up against Welsh number one Angharad Phillips, an opponent to whom Loveridge had already lost in the team event in four sets.

This individual match went the distance to a fifth-set decider, but Loveridge looked down and out at 10-8 behind, Phillips with two match points.
