QUALIFYING for three British Isles finals was a major achievement on the part of Guernsey's intrepid bowlers, but they had to settle for three silver medals at the Stanley club in County Durham yesterday.

Lianna de la Mare (nee Bichard, pictured) lost to England junior champion Bex Field 21-12 in the women's under-25 singles final, while her brother Kris Bichard and new husband Dan de la Mare went down 30-19 in the final of the men's pairs.

The brothers-in-law played inbetween Gary Pitschou and Matt Le Ber in the final of the men's fours, and the Guernsey quartet were expected to do well. But they, too, had an off day, and lost 23-12.

Field, who won this title in 2009, was a key figure in the England team that annexed the British team title at the weekend and she had conceded only eight shots in her first two games, beating Welsh star Kerry Packwood and Scot Rebecca Campbell by the same 21-4 scoreline.
