DAME Mary Perkins has become Britain's first self-made woman billionaire, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

The co-founder of Specsavers, pictured, is said to have seen her wealth and that of her family grow to £1.1bn - a 42% increase in the past year.

Her husband, Douglas, is now the richest man from Wales, the newspaper reported yesterday.

The couple, who live in the island, have been listed 56th in the top 100 on the list.
