KING GEORGE V FIELD – the home of domestic competitive cricket – is to get a major facelift.

The Guernsey Sports Commission are overseeing the clear-up which could lead to a major extension to the playing area on Les Blanc Bois northern side of the ground.

Work on clearing the old Babbe Vinery site next to the KGV is about to start and, within a few weeks, the unedifying sight of greenhouse rubble, weeds, chimneys, heating pipes, boilers and former packing shed, will be levelled and seeded to grass.

Stuart Falla, chairman of the commission, said that while deliberating over potential uses for the substantial additional area which butts onto the Les Blanc Bois retirement homes and extends in part all the way to the Rue Cohu, they wanted to become good neighbours.

'The place deserved to be lifted,' he said.
