More than 1,500 people in Europe have been infected with a new strain of the killer bacteria. The infection can lead to complications affecting the kidneys and blood and has so far caused the death of 18 people – all cases have been linked with travel to Germany.
Director of Environmental Health Val Cameron (pictured) yesterday issued advice to travellers.
'Symptoms are bloody diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and fever,' she said. 'If you have any of these symptoms and have travelled to Germany in the last 10 days, go to your GP who will arrange for tests.'
