HEATHER WATSON celebrated becoming the new British number two by defeating 15th seed Chanelle Scheepers in the Aegon Classic yesterday.

The 19-year-old Sarnian found fame after winning her first-round French Open encounter last month and she faultlessly moved from clay to grass, beating the South African Scheepers 6-3, 7-5. She was the only Briton in action on day one to win.

It was certainly a winnable match for Watson in Birmingham, the tournament a warm-up to Wimbledon, as she celebrated news of her highest ever world ranking, now No. 93.

Despite her seeding, Scheepers is ranked only four places higher than Watson after a significant drop recently, although it was the South African who took early control.
