The Guernsey champion's level-par 70 was the day's best gross score by one from David Nicolle and it enabled him to close to within two shots of the scratch leader Danny Blondel, who shot a 75, 10 shots worse than his opening day effort.

Jack Mitchell is still in contention after a 72 to be four behind Blondel, but it would be a major surprise if anyone else came through at this late stage.

John Good's bid for the UV Trophy off handicap hit trouble yesterday after a 75, but he is still only one shot adrift of the new leader, George Melhuish, who added a 66 to his previous rounds of 65 and 71.
