GUERNSEY top the medals table after a memorable opening day of competition at the 14th NatWest Island Games in the Isle of Wight.

The Sarnians lead the way with five gold medals already secured thanks to the efforts of the athletes and cyclists, while the shooters have also contributed to the overall haul so far.

Arguably the most expected gold of the week for Team Guernsey set them on their way as Lee Merrien won the opening men's half-marathon yesterday morning. That was turned into a double gold as the team, which was made up by Mike Wilesmith and Steve Dawes, emerged as the top trio.

Then, in the afternoon, Guernsey cyclists made up for lost time. With the sport not having been included in the 2009 Aland Games, it was a golden return to action for Sarnian riders as they dominated the town criteriums in Ventnor.
