LED by the greatest male swimmer the island has ever produced and the 14-year-old female star of now and the future, Guernsey's swim team made a remarkable start to the Games at Medina last evening.

Six gold medals, including two apiece for Ian Powell and Kristina Neves, was a brilliant start and the signs are that there will be plenty more where they come from as the week goes on in the pool.

Powell smashed the NatWest Island Games 200m butterfly record to claim Guernsey's first gold medal in the pool, clocking 1-58.43. He also took 0.6sec. off the 50m backstroke record, winning gold in 25.27sec.

Neves achieved victory in the women's 200m freestyle, clocking 2-02.05 to slash almost two seconds off the previous record. The 14-year-old also broke the women's 100m butterfly record, winning with a time of 1-03.03.
