Kylie is new sprint queen

THE Fairway Athletics Centre track seems to bring the best out of Guernsey's top women sprinters.

Eighteen years ago it was Jay Peet who was the queen of the track, but last night it was Kylie Robilliard who blasted out of the blocks to take 100m gold in a new island record time of 11.94sec.

Not only that, the little 24-year-old blitzed the Games record set by no less an athlete than the Isle of Wight's own former Commonwealth Games medallist, Kelly Sotherton, whose time of 12.02 had stood for seven Games.

Mind you, Robilliard had to work every inch of the straight to deny the defending champion, Aland's Hanna Wiss, another gold. That it was so close was something of a surprise as the Sarnian had finished well clear of the Alander in their semi-final an hour earlier.
