NatWest Island Games day six - update
GUERNSEY have finished the 14th Island Games 15 golds clear of nearest challengers Isle of Man at the top of the medals table.
GUERNSEY have finished the 14th Island Games 15 golds clear of nearest challengers Isle of Man at the top of the medals table.
The Sarnian team added 11 golds to their tally on the final day to finish on 41, with the same number of silvers and 25 bronzes too.
Unfortunately, the football team suffered an extra-time defeat, 4-2, to the hosts Isle of Wight in the concluding final of the Games, but that will not take the shine off what has been a golden week for Guernsey sport.
GUERNSEY have, unofficially, past their previous best gold-medals haul away from home in the Island Games.
The Sarnians, who have topped the medals table from day one in the Isle of Wight, have surpassed the 40 golds won in the Shetland Islands six years ago thanks to golds from Rob Smart and the men's team in the mountain biking cross-country.
Earlier this afternoon, Alice Loveridge won women's singles gold in table tennis and gold with Dawn Morgan in the doubles while Garry Dodd and Olly Langlois joined forces to win men's doubles gold.
The athletics programme finished on a high for Guernsey, too, s the men's 4x400m squad retained their title.
Meanwhile, Sarah Garbutt and Paul Le Tocq enjoyed mixed doubles success in badminton.
Overall, with the football team currently winning 1-0 in the final against the hosts, Guernsey have won 11 golds on the final day so far.
TEAM Guernsey have added four more gold medals to their tally on the final day of the Games with more finals yet to come.
So far today the Sarnians have enjoyed double success on the track with Louise Perrio claiming her second gold of the week, this time in the 5,000m, while the women's 4x100m relay team of Emma Le Conte, Kylie Robilliard, Teresa Roberts and Caroline Kyle pulled off a brilliant victory of their own. The men's equivalent race saw Guernsey finish with silver.
Meanwhile, the pairing of Gayle Lloyd and Kiara Green retained their women's doubles badminton title in the all-Guernsey final against Sarah Garbutt and Renee Stuart.
In another all-Guernsey final, Garry Dodd and Alice Loveridge beat Olly Langlois and Dawn Morgan in the mixed doubles table tennis.
IT IS the final day of the 14th NatWest Island Games and Team Guernsey are looking to put the gloss on what has already been a golden week.
The Sarnians go into day six with a healthy lead at the top of the medals table, which has Guernsey on 30 golds, 33 silvers and 17 bronzes, although it is believed an administration error has the island with one more gold than it actually has as the women's cycling team won silver in the time trial yesterday, not gold as published on the official results website.
However, more golds are certain to follow today as there is an all-Guernsey women's doubles badminton final to come and the island is also well represented in other badminton finals, athletics finals and the semi-finals of the table tennis.
The men's football team are in the final of their competition against hosts the Isle of Wight this afternoon and Guernsey also has competitors well placed in the golf events, shooting and a strong mountain bike cross-country challenge to come.
