FIRE service funding cuts have meant tough decisions on staffing and dropping fire training for pre-schoolers.

In late 2010, fire service bosses had to decide where to cut back when a funds shortage combined with a need to create three new posts for firefighters.

When the previous fire chief, Ron Taylor, retired in 2010, the decision was made to reduce senior officers from five to four and get rid of a fire safety officer.

Fire chief Nigel Acton said the only service that had to be cut when the fire safety officer was lost was the pre-school programme, which was the 'least painful' thing to drop.
