AN APPLICATION to convert the Sandy Hook Shopper into three homes has been approved.

Owner Sandpiper said it had still not decided what to do with the premises, but that the granting of permission had given it more options. 'Now it has been approved we can consider what we want to do next,' said area manager Kenny McDonald.

In a strategic review of its stores, Sandpiper concluded that the Sandy Hook Shopper was not suitable for modern retailing and it would not be cost effective to bring it up to standard. The company has spent money improving its much bigger store at L'Islet crossroads, which it said could adequately provide for the area.

But some of the shop's customers said it was well used by the community. David Hainsworth, 50, said: 'It will be another little store we are losing. It is convenient for the residents of this area. I live in St Saviour's but am often down the Bridge so I use it on my way home.'
