Five-end blitz of 15 shots sees champions dethroned

REIGNING champions Jan Lawrence and Angela Bartie will not be reclaiming their Brookman Pairs title after a 20-13 quarter-final defeat to Jean Simon and Gwen de la Mare.

Lawrence and Bartie led 10-5 after 10 ends but their opponents roared back to win the next five, scoring 15 points in the process. The champions restored hope with a double and a single in the next two ends, but Simon and de la Mare secured the win soon after.

Northern pair Joanne Hardill and Alison Merrien eventually pulled away from Vale Rec opponents Sally Tranter and Anne Simon. The teams were level at 8-8 and 14-14 before two fours and a single without reply gave Hardill and Merrien victory.

Sally Paul and Lucy Beere held off a fightback from Carol Besnard and Jan Cleal to triumph 24-12, while Linda Nellis and Lynn Small clawed back from 15-7 down to beat Aimee Ogier and Jackie Nicolle 17-15.
