HIGH school pupils could be wearing jackets and ties from September 2012, the Education minister has said.

Deputy Carol Steere (pictured) believed Les Beaucamps High wanted to introduce its new uniform at the same time as students would be moving into the first part of the new build, adding that phasing-in uniforms could be a possibility with the other schools.

'We've said to high schools we want it as soon as possible. Schools are currently having discussions with suppliers on cost and what the uniforms will look like.

'Each school wants to retain its identity in terms of style, such as colour and whether to have badges - those have yet to be finalised.

'The board sets the overall policy, but the schools will finalise their look.'

An issue put to Education about the cost of uniforms, which partly prompted the idea of phasing them in, was that students entering their final year would need a new uniform for just three terms.

But Deputy Steere said, as she understood it, Year 11s changed their uniform anyway to reflect their senior status within the schools.

'These are the kind of issues being considered,' she said. 'But if they change for their final year anyway it shouldn't make too much difference as there will be a similar cost between the new uniform and the one they would have purchased as senior students.'
