But after 154 minutes of brave resistance and having, remarkably, been a set up against the world number four and three-times Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova, Heather Watson bowed out of the US Open at Flushing Meadows 6-3, 5-7, 3-6.
Watson, ranked 100 places below her glamour opponent in the latest WTA rankings, played a stonker of a match that had the noisy Russian desperately worried and searching deep within herself for answers on the huge Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
Even deep into the second set there was every chance that the Guernsey girl could cause a huge upset.
