States reject college means testing

AN AMENDMENT that would have led to a radical change in the way three colleges are funded was rejected this afternoon.

Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher (pictured) wanted a model that would mean all parents wanting to send their children to Elizabeth College, Ladies College or Blanchelande were means tested and paid towards their education on a graded amount, from nothing to £6,000.

It was one of the options rejected by the Policy Council - it would have saved an estimated £1m. a year by 2018.

The amendment lost by 40 votes to five.

The States has now gone into general debate on how to cut the States support of the colleges.
