THERE needs to be a public debate about how future large-scale improvements to the colleges will be paid for, according to the principal of Elizabeth College.

George Hartley (pictured) said his school would not be able to afford some of the major capital projects to maintain its buildings and would need outside funding.

'It is something that is very much on our mind. It is a magnificent building but it does require a great deal of maintenance and that has high costs.'

'The fact that funding has been reduced will not make that easy but it is something we will have to work with.'
