2008 review of Education needs to be considered

IF THE Policy Council commissions a fully independent review of the Education Department, it should examine the extent to which it has benefited from the Robinson review, a former teacher has said.

The report in 2008 said external inspections for schools and other educational establishments were routine and it was something the department should consider by 2011.

Deputy Sean McManus (pictured) said the review's terms of reference should also allow the reviewer the scope to examine the effectiveness of the policies and structures that supported the most challenged and challenging youngsters in the high schools.

'Such a review should be welcomed as an opportunity to inform subsequent decision-making in respect of the allocation, direction of resources and appropriate levels of support to enable all pupils to access and benefit from their curriculum entitlement.'
