THERE was high drama in Paphos yesterday, when every eye was trained on Guernsey's stand-in Atlantic men's singles representative Matt Le Ber, who was involved in not one, but two remarkable 21-20 thrillers.

Drawn to play against two world-class players, Le Ber defeated 2002 Commonwealth Games singles champion Bobby Donnelly, but came up tantalisingly short against Welsh star Jonathan Tomlinson.

'I suppose you could say I won the game I should have lost, but lost the one I should have won,' said Le Ber last night, as he recalled his two classic encounters.

Against Donnelly, a big South African, Le Ber (pictured) was never in the lead until the 26th end, although he twice drew level, at 9-9 and 12-12, before Donnelly took charge with a 2-1-2-2 sequence to lead, 19-12 after 20 ends.
