DESPITE fine wins in the singles from Matt Le Ber and Lucy Beere in the Atlantic bowls championships in Cyprus yesterday, Guernsey were in danger of entering the record books for all the wrong reasons.
Last night, under floodlights, and as temperatures plummeted, Gwen de la Mare's Guernsey quartet looked as if they might go 18 ends without troubling the scorers, as England piled on the pressure.
Trailing 35-0 after 12 ends, Jean Simon, Jan Lawrence, Angela Bartie and de la Mare received a loud cheer when they claimed a double on the 13th end – and they bravely added a four two ends later.
Amy Gowshall's England team, with three Commonwealth Games medallists aboard, finished modestly with three singles to return a massive 40-6 scorecard, but Gowshall insisted that it was not as one-sided as the score might have suggested.
