BUS drivers set to lose their jobs at the end of the Island Coachways contract hope to be re-employed by Guernsey's next operator, managing director Hannah Beacom said.

Out of 90 employees, 50 now face redundancy after the company walked away from negotiations for a new bus contract – deeming it to be financially unviable.

Mrs Beacom said the cuts would predominantly come from the pool of drivers used operate the scheduled bus service.

Other staff would continue to work for the company's coach operations.

When approached by the Guernsey Press yesterday, drivers at the bus terminus said they had been instructed not to speak to the media.
