THE Guernsey Voluntary Service was recognised last night as Charity of the Year at the island's first Community Awards.

More than 200 people packed St James to see Guernsey's charities rewarded for their efforts.

Nineteen organisations were nominated for Charity of the Year and three made the shortlist that included the Guernsey Specials Gym Club and the Guernsey Cheshire Home.

But the GVS, formerly the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, took the title.

Chairman Ross Paisley said he was overwhelmed with the accolade but it was thanks to the 527 volunteers that supported the charity's day centres, meals on wheels and wide range of activities.
