WORK to develop the junction at Route de la Tourelle in St Peter's has marked the end of a long hard fight, airport campaigners have said.

The project to make the junction with Route de Plaisance bigger, with an island in the middle, as part of the airport extension plans, began last week and is due to continue until 29 January.

People living nearby who campaigned against the runway project and the permanent closure of Rue de la Mare said they had no choice but to accept the work was going to happen.

'I never thought the whole thing was necessary,' said former pilot John Gibbs, 77.

'I don't think it should have happened but they didn't listen to me. '
