ISLANDERS are being warned to lock up their property after Guernsey became a prime target for scrap thieves last year.

Judge Philip Robey confirmed there had been 21 complaints in 2011 when jailing 22-year-old UK scrap metal dealer William Collins for two months.

Collins had stolen a pick-up truck, broken it up and tried to ship parts from it to England.

Collins, of 119, New Road, Netley Abbey, Southampton, admitted the offence when he appeared in the Magistrate's Court.
