PEMBROKE shook yesterday as an anti-tank mine was blown up by police bomb disposal officers, blasting sand and shrapnel into the air.

Many people had gathered on the beach to watch the officers move the dinner-plate sized device before detonating it.

Gary Hocking, 29, got to press the trigger, having discovered the mine with his girlfriend, Donna Suckling, 30, when walking their dogs on Saturday.

He said he had not expected the explosion to be so loud when it echoed round the bay.
