A BARGE carrying 2,000 tonnes of aggregate docked at Longue Hougue's temporary harbour yesterday as Lagan Construction started to import 250,000 tonnes of material.

The operation is part of the £80.4m runway pavements rehabilitation project.

Lagan contracts manager Steven Turner said the company would be bringing the aggregate into the island for the next four months.

'Subject to tides, it will be the intention to offload one ship per day - each ship holds approximately 2,000 tonnes.'

The airport was closed for two days last week, during which material removed from the bank was used to replace soil contaminated with the firefighting foam PFos, which has been excavated from alongside the west end of the runway.
