Alderney's population, workforce falls sharply

But States of Alderney chief executive Roy Burke, pictured, was optimistic that the situation would improve and he said it was not yet time to abandon the island.

He did not know how far the number of people living there would have to fall for the island to be no longer viable.

'But I don't expect we are anywhere near that figure,' he said.
