FORMER Education minister Carol Steere has admitted that her department did not do enough to halt the decline at La Mare de Carteret High.

While maintaining her stance that islanders needed to look at the educational experience of children as a whole, she acknowledged that measures put in place had failed to turn the school around.

She said she was sorry and disappointed about last year's GCSE results because all she wanted was the best for Guernsey students.

'I believe I did my best for education in Guernsey - I put my heart and soul into the role,' she said.

'What I did, and the action I took over the release of the GCSE results, was always about what I believed was in the best interest of pupils.'
