THIS was what they waited 61 years to see.
A plaque, dedicated to the memory of the 75 submariners who perished when HMS Affray foundered in April 1951, was unveiled at Douglas Quay in Alderney yesterday.
Around 200 relatives and supporters made the pilgrimage, with some coming from as far as Cumbria and the Outer Hebrides to see the plaque unveiled, 17 miles from where the wreck now rests.
Every one of the lost submariners' names was read out and Sgt Colin Solway played the Last Post. June Tower, widow of Lieutenant Engineer John Treleaven, stood up to read In Memoriam.
