EDUCATION is expected to consider closing primary schools as it looks to cope with falling pupil numbers and make savings of £1.6m.

The Mulkerrin review said that there were 800 empty places in the island's primary schools based on pupil/teacher ratios.

'This is quite different to the way school rolls are calculated in England and some head teachers dispute the 800 figure,' the report stated.

'However, if it were 500, it would have implications for school closures, and, indeed, the building of the new La Mare de Carteret High School.'

This States has already rejected closing St Sampson's Infants and St Andrew's Primary.
