WORK can finally get under way on the redevelopment of Longue Rue House and Maison Maritaine residential homes, after Housing and Health and Social Services gave final approval to the Guernsey Housing Association for the project.

The news comes a week after planning permission was granted to redevelop the St Martin's site to provide purpose-built extra-care accommodation. Permission had already been granted for the Vale site.

GHA chief executive Steve Williams, pictured, said work on both sites should start in the summer and be completed by 2014.

'We've spent hundred of hours with our architects, Housing and HSSD staff, ensuring that the new developments will meet all the needs of the people that will live in them,' he said.

'It's now full-steam ahead for us.'
