GUERNSEY'S new chief minister has received the backing of industry heads after promising to tackle the States deficit and diversify the economy.

Deputy Peter Harwood outlined his priorities for the new States, which included a tough line on spending and more focus on domestic issues, following his election on Tuesday.

And Confederation of Guernsey Industry chairman Richard Battersby, pictured, said the replacement for Deputy Lyndon Trott had 'made the right noises'.

But he urged caution over Deputy Harwood's pledge to focus more on domestic issues rather than international duties.

Institute of Directors chairman Anne Ewing said her members would be pleased by the result as Deputy Harwood would do a good job as chief minister.

Chamber of Commerce president Julian Winser said generally the feeling was positive.
