A SPECIAL verdict hearing began yesterday to determine whether a 51-year-old man is to be found not guilty of assaulting a policeman and breach of the peace by reason of insanity.

The Royal Court yesterday unanimously found that Brian Clancy did commit the two offences on Friday 6 January at Salerie Corner, St Peter Port.

Today, the court will hear medical evidence as to Mr Clancy's state of mind when he committed the offences.

The sitting Jurats will be asked to decide whether he was insane at the time and if he should therefore be found not guilty.
