GUERNSEY would not automatically scraps GCSEs if England did so, the Education minister said yesterday.

But Caroline Bowker, pictured, the local NASUWT secretary, who believes the plans to scrap GCSEs would be 'going back to the 1950s', said the island might not have a choice if examination boards stopped offering the qualification.

An emergency debate was held in the House of Commons yesterday after a document was leaked to the Daily Mail, revealing that the UK Education secretary, Michael Gove, wanted to return to O-levels.

Mr Gove refused to comment on any of the details in the story, but confirmed that he would be publishing a consultation paper on reforming the exam system in England.
