A Swiss holidaymaker has been killed after the carriage in which she was travelling overturned in Sark.

The woman was one of several Swiss visitors in the horse-drawn van, which overturned in the Dos d'Ane just after midday today. The van mounted a hedge and rolled onto its side, according to a police report.

All of the casualties were transferred to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, where the woman later died. A man also suffered serious injuries in the incident, while several other people sustained minor injuries.

The St John Ambulance and Rescue Service sent 15 employees and volunteers to the island to deal with the incident, when the alarm was raised at about 12.20pm.

They initially reported nine casualties in total, seven with minor injuries and two with potentially serious ones.

Five people, including one on a stretcher, were brought over on the Brecqhou Lass.

Guernsey Police sent several officers went to Sark to assist.

The Flying Christine III was deployed along with other vessels with Ambulance and Rescue staff on board to assess, treat and transfer casualties.

The ambulance reserve volunteers were activated to support ambulance operations in Guernsey.
