MAKING sure Saumarez Park was in peak condition for the royal visit later this month was the main reason behind the decision to postpone Le Viaer Marchi, which was due to take place this evening.

The rainfall, which has plagued the summer, has left the ground waterlogged.

The National Trust of Guernsey, which organised the event, visited the park on Friday night and, after a lot of consideration, said the event would have to be rescheduled.

'The ground is already waterlogged from the recent heavy rainfall and there has already been difficulty delivering the first load of equipment to the site,' a spokesperson for the trust said.

Speaking on BBC Radio Guernsey's Sunday phone-in the trust's president, Martin Ozanne, said the decision could have been different were it not for the royal visit.
